Police officials from police stations in Kalasin province brought DUI suspects to the Kalasin Court on the morning of 31 December 2019, New Year’s Eve. The drunk drivers were caught driving drunk by the New Year road checkpoints across the province during the night. Hundreds of drunk drivers sit in silence as their relatives travel to the court to pay the fines. The first 4 days of the 7 dangerous days the Kalasin Police have checked 169,772 vehicles and out of this number 17,523 have been prosecuted. 315 motorbikes and 58 cars have been seized because the drivers consumed alcohol exceeding the legal limit.

Arie Rojrattanabun, a judge from the Kalasin Court stated that starting from 27 to 30 December 2019 there have been at least 100 DUI drivers sent to the court a day. But on the morning of New Year’s Eve, the record has been broken and over 200 DUI drivers have been caught and sent to the court for prosecution. Each person has to pay a fine depending on the blood alcohol concentration and the vehicle that they were driving. Most receive a fine of 2,500 – 5,000 THB.

Those with no relatives coming to pay their fine are sent to the Kalasin prison. Most of the drunk drivers admit to their crimes. The judge also reveals that most drunk drivers who are caught have never been arrested before. This is because drinkers who have been arrested previously have learned their lesson after having to pay a heavy fine or living in prison for a while. Drinking and driving come with a punishment of 10,000 – 20,000 THB fine, imprisonment not exceeding 1 year, or both. The court can also order for your driver’s license to be suspended for at least 6 months, revoke your driver’s license, and seize your car not exceeding 7 days.
