Mini-bus drivers protest Grab service

The war to dominate Chiang Mai’s local public transport hots up today (July 1, 2019), with the drivers of the city’s Red Minibuses planning a mass protest against the growing popularity of Grab Taxis, Sanook.com reported.

Mr. Bunniam Boontha, representing Chiang Mai’s Red Minibus drivers, said they plan to assemble the 2,400 members in a mass protest. Sanook didn’t mention how the protest might take place or if they intended to blockade some streets.

Last week, the government said it was looking to amend the Land Transport Act to cover the newer ride-hailing services under its laws, effectively making them legal.

The Land Transport Department has said that it would look into the process of legalizing Grab Taxis and the closed online system featuring the App for booking and tracking paid rides.
