Online drive against BMA taking over art center
ARTISTS and their supporters have moved online to oppose Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s (BMA’s) plan to take back and itself operate Bangkok Art and Cultural Center (BACC) with the website they set up on Saturday May 12 having obtained over 10,000 backers so far, the Thai-language daily Matichon said today (May 14).
As of 9.25 a.m. this morning 10,368 people had signed up to oppose BMA’s takeover at www.change.org (#freebaac) with the online wave still continue.
The campaigners said in a message that they need another 15,000 supporters.
Assoc. Prof. Sutee Kunavichayanont, of Silpakorn University’s Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts, said the following on his Facebook page:
“This is another operation which BMA should not handle itself, nor give it out as a concession to the private sector, it has to be professionals who run it.”
According to Wikipedia, the Bangkok Art and Culture Center is a contemporary arts center with art, music, theater, film, design and cultural/educational events taking place in its exhibition and performance spaces.
The center includes cafes, commercial art galleries, bookshops, craft shops, and an art library. It is intended as a venue for cultural exchange, giving Bangkok an operational base on the international art scene. The building is over 4,000 square meters in size.
