Power Bank explodes in front of Chiang Mai Airport
A Power Bank exploded in front of Chiang Mai Airport on the 21st of this month (July 2019). The incident was shared online by the Facebook Page “Chiang Mai International Airport”. The Power Bank belonged to a tourist who was standing in front of the airport when it exploded.
The tourist was seen walking to the front of the Chiang Mai Airport Passenger Platform. The passenger was carrying a bag that suddenly started to burn. She decided to throw the bag away from herself to avoid getting her clothes caught on fire. It was later discovered that the source came from a power bank that exploded. Luckily, no one was harmed in the incident.
While the officials at the airport were clearing the area out, the power bank exploded once again. The Chiang Mai Airport Facebook Page captioned the footage from the security camera at the airport “If this incident took place on an airplane, imagine what would happen. This is why the security at airports have to be strict on the regulation with power banks. Safety is the main importance of our services”.
The current regulations for power banks are,
- Power banks higher than 32000 mAh are absolutely prohibited from going on the plane.
- Power banks between 20000 – 32000 mAh can be carried on the plane with a limit of 2 max.
- Power banks lower than 20000 mAh can be carried on the plane with a limit of 5 max.
Jatotiranan Intarat from the Chiang Mai Airport Security Team revealed that inside the passenger’s bag was a perfume bottle. It is estimated that the perfume leaked into the power bank that started a reaction with the Lithium-ion battery inside. The power bank was also charging the phone when it blew up.
This is a good warning to those who like to charge their phones on the power bank and leaving it in their bag, you never know if there is a liquid inside that can cause the battery to blow up.
