BMA: Properly managed street food
ACKNOWLEDGING that street food was vital to the soul of the city, BMA spoke on Thursday morning via chief adviser to Bangkok governor Wanlop Suwandee that street food vendors will still be allowed but with proper management to prevent negative impact on others who share the increasingly-crowded streets of Bangkok.
He said the small alleys and designated areas will still be allowed for them on the condition that they must not cause difficulties for other people while those on major streets are to be better organized.
“The BMA plans to promote Yaowarat and Khao San Road as major tourist attractions in Bangkok. Street food and street vendors are still allowed in the zoned areas, as we are trying to make the areas tidy and clean, but sellers must comply with the law,” he said.

Seller of immature durian arrested
WEDNESDAY April 19 at 5 p.m., police and agriculture officials arrested durian orchard owner Prachuap Kruawal while she was directing 10 workers to load the 1.4 tonnes of prematurely-harvested fruit on the truck of a buyer in Rayong’s Wang Chan district.
After the authorities found that her 1.4 of the total 3 tonnes of harvested durian were not mature enough for sale and not edible even though they have more weight, she was charged with violating the consumer protection law by deceiving her buyer that the durians were ripe.

High-rises on burnt-down and other Klong Toey areas
ACCORDING to the state-owned National Housing Authority (NHA) governor Tachaphol Kanjanakul, the agency is discussing with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) a plan to designate the 2,000-rai community zone with 43 communities in Bangkok’s Klong Toey area as a site to build residential high-rises to improve life there.
He said the location of these high-rises with the Chao Phraya River view will be discussed with representatives of local communities and a local mosque. The NHA will also discuss the idea with the Port Authority of Thailand as 26 communities in Klong Toey were on its land, he said.
This development would be similar to NHA’s plans to develop 36 high-rises with about 20,000 units worth 36 billion baht for existing residents of 9,000 flats in the 181-rai Din Daeng district of the capital and then for new residents as well, he said.

Drunk driving arrests up
THE deputy spokesperson of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) Col Sirichan Nga-thong said during past Songkran (April 12-16) authorities seized total 8,128 vehicles from drunk drivers of which 6,177 were motorcycles and 1,951 automobiles.
She said that safety advice like the use of seat belts and crash helmets were observed quite well by motorists but the number of those who drove under influence of alcohol had risen.
During last year’s seven-day Songkran road safety campaigns, authorities impounded 4,609 vehicles from drunk drivers, 75.7% of which were motorcycles.
During this year’s Songkran (April 11-16), road accidents killed 335 people and injured 3,506 others with Chiang Mai having the highest number of accidents and injuries while Nakhon Ratchasima had the highest death toll.
