34 groups apply to set up parties at opening bell

AS many as 34 groups of politicians applied to set up new political parties the first morning the door to do so was opened by the Election Commission (EC), Thai News Agency reported today (March 2)

EC’s caretaker secretary-general, Pol Colonel Jarungwit Phumma said the EC office is checking the papers and qualifications of the applicants and the result will be out in 30 days.

He added that the EC office has to rush in doing this work so that all the groups could start undertaking necessary party activities, especially recruiting at least 500 new members, and hold a party meeting.

Pol Colonel Jarungwit explained that there are now more details and steps in setting up a new political party because the Constitution  wants political parties to be political institutions so that is why raised the bar on the qualifications of party members.
