5m speed pills, 120 kg Ice seized in big drug bust

METROPOLITAN police skillfully tracked down and smashed a major drug trafficking gang in neighboring Nonthaburi province and seized over 5 million amphetamine pills, 120 kilograms of Ice (crystal methamphetamine) and weapons, Thai News Agency reported today (Dec. 14).

Pol.Gen. Chakthip Chaijinda, the national police chief, who announced the arrest of Mr Pornthep Meenak and his accomplices, mentioned that members of this network have already been arrested twice before during which a total of 20 million amphetamine pills and lots more Ice were seized.

One of them was jailed for trafficking amphetamine pills but upon being freed, took up this criminal activity again.

Police moved in on the gang just as they were moving drugs in a vehicle and found 2.5 million amphetamine pills hidden there.

They searched a rented house and an additional 2.8 million amphetamine pills, 120 kilograms of Ice, an M16 assault rifle, a CZ92 subcompact pistol, lots of bullets and a total of 3 vehicles were seized.

Pol.Gen. Chakthip said during the past 3 weeks police have seized 26 million amphetamine pills, worth 4 billion baht, and 130 kilograms of Ice, worth 130 million baht, with 3 countries being the destination.

He added that all police units will be  very vigilant during the New Year festival to prevent drug smuggling.
