Alleged rapist saved from lynching

A 41-year-old man accused of trying to rape a mentally-retarded woman narrowly escaped lynching by angry villagers in the northeastern Thai province of Khon Kaen, the Thai-language daily Khao Sod reported today (March 10).

The attempted rape took place last night, as a big group of villagers was watching an open-air movie screened by a private company hired by a fellow villager. The suspect, who is a member of the movie team, befriended the young woman and led her into a toilet.

The woman resisted as he tried to undress her. “She screamed and I punched her in the face and stomach and went back to work,” he said.

The police had to calm down angry villagers as the suspect re-enacted the crime.
