A sparrow in a tiny bag

A Thai Facebook member  (Oct 4, 2019) wrote about an old woman in the northeastern province of Kalasin who sells sparrows to people who want to make merit.

“Each bird is put in a small plastic bag with tiny holes for it to breathe,” the Facebook member wrote.

“I asked the grandma whether she felt sorry for the birds, and she said ‘No.’ Even criminals are put in jail.”

The woman sells each bird for 100 baht to people who want to make merit by releasing the animal.

The story was shared by more than 10,000 readers, who said it was cruelty to animals.
