Afternoon tea in chic setting

According to afternoontea.co.uk, the British tradition of afternoon tea was started in the nineteenth century by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford. Those days people usually took two main meals a day, breakfast and dinner at around 8 p.m., but she complained of having a sinking feeling late afternoon so started have tea and light snacks during this time.

She later invited friends to join in and when other hostesses heard about it they followed suit. Before long all of fashionable society was sipping tea and nibbling sandwiches.
