ATM in Ranong spits out 10X cash.
An ATM in Ranong Province had a glitch and put out 10 times the amount of cash withdrawn, for example, those who withdrew 1,000 THB received 10,000 THB. The bank realized what was going on after a number of people had already received the extra money. Officials are now asking bank customers to return the excess money or else there will be punishment. Police Colonel Kritsana Pattanacharoen the police deputy spokesman stated that they received notification from the Ranong Police Station about an ATM error on 13 June 2020.
This ATM belongs to Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) located in the main city of Ranong. The error resulted in the ATM putting out 10X the amount of money withdrawn. Locals received a lot more than they expected when they decided to withdraw some cash from their accounts. This is like a scene in a movie, but in reality, none of them are lucky as the money must be returned, even if they have already used it. On the night of the 13th, many good citizens went to file a report with the police along with returning the money. The Ranong SCB manager picked up the money at the station.
Those who have already returned the money revealed that they wanted to file a report as proof of good intentions. One person withdrew 2,700 THB but received 27,000 THB and another person withdrew 1,200 THB but received 12,000 THB. The Ranong SCB manager stated that the error was caused by an ATM servicer who accidentally programmed the machine to misread the amount of money being put out. So far 4 citizens have returned the money and more have contacted the bank stating that they will be returning it on the 15th.
The deputy spokesman stated that those who used the specific ATM when it glitched must contact the Ranong SCB or the Ranong Police. The bank can file a complaint against those who choose to stay quiet on charges relating to misappropriation with a punishment of imprisonment not exceeding 3 years, a fine not exceeding 60,000 THB or both.
