Mahasarakham hosting Thailand’s first ever Turkey event.
Supat Eowchai from the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives was the president of the turkey celebration that took place on December 20th of this year. Supat officially opened the ceremony and was also the president handing away the awards for each competition inside the event. In this celebration, The project to increase the value of poultry was established.
This will lead to the establishment of products made from the turkey that will conform to the regulations of the government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives such as the GMP. The first ever turkey event in Thailand will be held from the 19th to the 21st of December 2018. The goal of the event is to create a connection between those in the turkey farm industry to the regional turkey market.
The event will help consumers know that there are turkey products grown and made in Thailand. This will give the turkey more opportunities to be made into different products and by-products. Where inside the event, many technologies are on display to provide manufacturers and consumers an idea of how the turkey can function as the main ingredient in many products. Special classes such as tips and tricks on turkey marketing will also be held at the event by marketing professionals in the retail and wholesale industry.
There will also be a turkey competition where turkeys from around the country will compete against their perfection. Students from local schools will be competing in an art competition with the concept of who will be able to create the best turkey art piece. Turkey experts will be at the event at all times to provide specific knowledge about the turkey.
Ampan Weltonti from the Department of Livestock Development stated that the turkey was brought into Thailand around WWII, American soldiers who were sent to the base in Thailand bought the turkeys to Nakhon Ratchasima province and Udon Thani province during the war. Since then, the Department of Livestock Development has collected different breeds of the turkey and have researched in different methods in which to farm the turkeys with the best results. The knowledge was then handed over to farmers giving rise to business opportunities.
Today, there are over 4,600 turkey farmers in Thailand with over 40,000 turkeys sold each year. This adds up to about 200 tons of turkey sold each year, making up an income total of over 50 million THB annually to the turkey farmers.
