Pineapple farmers get Army help

ROYAL Thai Army (RTA) soldiers will soon have a new dessert on their menu, thanks to this year’s surplus of pineapple in the country.

The idea is the brainchild of RTA Commander-in-Chief Gen Chalermchai Sittisart to alleviate the plight of pineapple farmers who are facing a price slump, the Thai-language Daily News reported today (May 23, 2018).

The first purchase will be from pineapple farmers in the southern Thai province of Prachuap Khiri Khan, where the price of pineapple has gone down by more than 50 percent because of the surplus of pineapples in the market.

Gen Chalermchai said the Army will buy 200 tons of pineapples from farmers at 4 baht per kilogram in 8 districts of the southern province.
