Security beefed up at Full Moon Party

THERE was tight security at the Full Moon Party on Koh Pha Ngan from last night till dawn today with 200 policemen and soldiers being on hand to ensure the safety of around 20,000 foreigners attending it, the Thai-language daily Matichon reported today (April 1).

Surat Thani province Governor Wichawut Chinto and the Deputy Commander of Region 8 Police Pol Maj Gen Chalit Thinthani personally went to the island to inspect this world-famous party.

Wichawut said the situation in the past led to this tight security which was chiefly aimed at reassuring tourists. There was also heavy focus on preventing the distribution of drugs.

As some tourists had complained about adulterated alcohol being sold on Koh Pha Ngan, the Excise  Department has checked and is maintaining tight control of all outlets on the island.

Some negative photos of the Full Moon Party have spread online overseas, Wichawut said, but pointing out that these were taken at least 3 years ago.

This is evident from the stage in the middle of the party which is said to be the center of drug distribution but today the event is organized differently and security beefed up with spots arranged for tourists to sleep in.

As these photos are harming Thai tourism industry, it is essential to build up a good image and win the confidence of the tourists who attend these parties, he added.
