Roads in Bangkok are empty which is a rare sight to see as the Covid-19 situation in Thailand continues to increase in numbers. Most of the people are Working from Home. Vendors reveal they need to leave home as it is necessary to find money everyday. The Pathumwan Intersection in front of famous malls in Bangkok can be seen empty on the morning of 20 July 2021. The Centre for Covid-19 situation Administration (CCSA) asked the public and private sectors to allow their employees to Work From Home. This is one of the safety regulations in limiting the spread of Covid-19.
As a result, there is almost no traffic even in the busiest areas. In front of famous destinations such as big malls there are a few taxis, tuk tuks, and win motorbikes waiting for customers. As for other public transportation including buses and the sky train it is much less crowded during rush hour compared to before the order to work from home took place. The Sanook News Team asked a maid at the BTS skytrain and received information that even though employees cannot work from home there has been a change in the schedules. The employee admits there are risks from coming to work everyday even though she has received both doses of the vaccine.
Those who still have to travel for work during this time are taking safety precautions very seriously, for their own good and to keep the virus away from their family members at home. Win motorbike drivers and food vendors stated to the news team that they have no choice but to travel for work, as there is no guaranteed salary for them. If they didn’t come to work outside as usual then there would not be income to pay the bills and take care of their family. Most important bills include water, electricity, rent, children’s tuition, and food.
