Raid on poker den nets 51 Thai, foreign gamblers

A RAID on a poker den at a warehouse in Bangkok’s Bangkapi district led to the arrest of 51 Thai and foreign poker players and the operator plus chips worth over 51 million baht, Thai Rath newspaper said today (March 5).

Pol. Lt. Gen. Sayam Boonsom, head of the Metropolitan Police, and his team said Mr. Sittisak (surname withheld), 39, was arrested on a charge of illegally organising gambling while 51 poker players from Thailand, Vietnam, Israel, Belarus, Pakistan, Denmark, India, China, Singapore, Iceland and Russia were charged with jointly engaging in illegal gambling on poker.

Seized at the warehouse in Soi Pho Kaew 3, Khlong Chan subdistrict, Bang Kapi district, at 9.12 p.m. last night were three poker tables, 66 decks of cards, two notebooks, a banknote counter and a time display sign.

Also seized were two chip boxes, 891 red chips, worth at 100 baht each, totaling 89,100 baht;  2,167 black chips, worth 1,000 baht each, totaling 2,167,000 baht; 1,700 yellow chips, worth 10,000 baht each, totaling 17,000,000 baht; 300 blue chips, worth 500 baht each, totaling 150,000 baht; 1,700 green chips, worth 50 baht each, totaling 85,000 baht; 500 brown chips; 29 pink chips; 320 chip cards, worth 100,000 baht each, totaling 32,000,000 baht; 315,050 baht in Thai banknotes; 1,900 US dollars; and a 100 yuan banknote.

Of the 17 items seized the value of chips alone was approximately 51,411,100 baht.

The raid followed a tip-off that gambling was taking place in this warehouse and when the police team arrived they found the poker players at the tables. The suspects confessed to gambling on poker and taking assets.
