A rice whiskey drinking competition has received heavy backlash from the online community. The competition will cost 500 THB to join with some strict rules. The contestants will start drinking from 6 pm to midnight. Netizens have agreed that this can be life-threatening and sounds like a terrible idea. Rice whiskey is a common alcoholic drink in Thailand and is popular. This is due to the cheap price and the high alcohol content. It is actually one of the hardest whiskeys to drink because of the same reason why it is so popular. The whiskey is called Lao Khao in Thai which translates to White Whiskey. Most rice whiskey is 40-proof and can be purchased in most convenience stores across the country.
The famous Facebook page named “Mor Lab Panda” in Thai posted about the competition on 23 September 2022. The page stated the competition comes with a prize of 10,000 THB but all contestants must pay 500 THB to join. All joiners will have 6 hours to drink as much as they can on 11 October 2022. The online community immediately expressed their opinions mainly concerning how bad of an idea the competition sounds like. The period of 6 hours of drinking nonstop can be life-threatening. This is especially because they will be drinking pure rice whiskey not mixed with anything else.
There are rules placed including contestants cannot vomit or spill the whiskey. Throughout the competition, music will be played, and snacks provided to help make the experience enjoyable. Contestants who make it until midnight will then be given a test to measure their alcohol level. The person with the highest level will win the 10,000 THB prize. All contestants must also take a drug test before joining. Netizens have also commented that the competition is very similar to a famous Thai short story. This story is named “Whiskey competition day” where two villages come together for a drinking competition. What do you think about this event that will take place on 11 October? Is it even legal?
