Big rush to join Wan Lai festival at Bang Saen beach

LOTS of tourists and local people are flocking to Bang Saen beach at next door Chonburi province to join the Wan Lai festival taking place today and tomorrow (April 16-17), the Thai-language dialy Matichon reported.

There was many kilometers long tailback on the stretch of Sukhumvit road leading to Bang Saen beach, and among them were several pickup trucks with large containers of water at the rear.

Among the events at the “Wan Lai” (which translates as ‘the day that flows’) festival is a competition in which up to 100 intricate sand sculptures are created on the beach, with the winner to be announced tomorrow.

Most of these are in the form of sand pagodas known as chedi sai, but there are other structures too.

Bang Saen municipality, which arranged the festival, said this year the sand sculptures will be kept for a week to allow tourists and the public more time to come and view them.

There are other activities too at this festival with well-known bands and DJs entertaining the revelers, including Big Ass, Boy Peacemaker, Mild,  Paradox,  Thai Hop and  The Mousses

At the beach itself lots of people were seen splashing and spraying water at each in a joyous mood.
