CHIANG Mai Night Safari nocturnal zoo has introduced a new-born red-shanked douc langur to the world to welcome Mother’s Day which is celebrated on Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s birthday August 12, Thai News Agency reported today (August 10, 2018).
This species of Old World monkey is among the most colorful of all primates. It is sometimes called the “costumed ape” for its extravagant appearance. From its knees to its ankles it sports maroon-red “stockings”, and it appears to wear white forearm length gloves. Its attire is finished with black hands and feet, according to Wikipedia.
The golden face is framed by a white ruff, which is considerably fluffier in males. The eyelids are a soft powder blue. The tail is white with a triangle of white hair at the base. Males of all ages have a white spot on both sides of the corners of the rump patch, and red and white genitals.
Night Safari’s new baby douc langur was born 2 weeks ago to its mother, Hong Ok, and father, Kin Chae. This welcomed cute addition increased the family to 8.
The success in increasing douc langur’s population fittingly marks Mother’s Day because it fully demonstrates the love between a mother and her child, with the newborn being cradled at its mother’s breast for at least a year before being let loose to feed itself.
Pingnakorn Development Bureau head Mrs Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul presided over the introduction of the new born douc langur to the world by giving the family some special food to eat.
