IF you are in Kanchanaburi town to the west Thailand, which is known for the Death Railway built during World War II, and would like to go on a hair-raising culinary adventure then drop by a homely restaurant where dishes generously sprinkled with crickets are served up, the Thai-language daily Matichon reported this week.
Called “Krua Chae Poo Aharn Pa” and located in this town’s Nong Bua subdistrict, it is owned by the friendly 38-year-old Chae Poo whose real name is Ms Sinaporn Siriban.
She said after deciding to invest in opening a restaurant, she opted to not make it too posh because clients would then think the food is expensive and stay away.
As her friend has a cricket farm nearby selling these insects’ eggs wholesale, she decided to come up with an original menu using them as the highlight.
After trying many times she finally came up with a good menu with Yum Ching Leed Gai Thod or Cricket and Fried Egg Salad being the restaurant’s specialty.
Other good dishes here are Somtam Roi Doi Chin Reed or Papaya Salad Topped with Cricket and Gai Chiew Chin Reed Thod or Fried Cricket Omelet, which is similar to Minced Pork Omelet, a favorite dish of many Thais.
To reach this restaurant go down the main road in Kanchanaburi town, go pass Wat Nong Bua temple and after the curve and before the Lad Yai traffic lights, you will see it on the left hand side.
