Kudos for Kathu’s culinary delights

IN this new segment, I will share with you some of my favorite places to eat in different areas of Phuket, starting with Kathu, a residential village located right in the heart of the island, a few minutes’ ride from Central Festival and approximately 10 minutes from Patong Beach. As always, I would love to hear from you, so feel free to let me know if there is a place you think should be on the list.

Mee Ton Poe

This restaurant is an institution in Phuket and is actually the second venue from the owners, the original being located in Phuket Town. If you have never tried authentic food from Phuket or simply miss the heat of a delicious dish, this is the place you should be having lunch right now. Some classics include Mee Ton Poe, of course, which is thick yellow fried noodles with seafood, pork and vegetable toppings

Open daily from 8 am till 8 pm.

Da Sandro Phuket

A little gem of Italian cuisine that will give you a feeling of travelling to Italy from the moment you step in. This family-run restaurant offers a wide selection of Italian delicacies and a great value on their meat and fish. A good selection of wines is here to complement the dinner, so are the home-made ice creams and delicious desserts. Try the Gnocchi al Gorgonzola or go with the Chef’s recommendation, you will not be disappointed.

Open daily from 4 pm to 11 pm. Closed on Wednesdays.

Thong Dee Brasserie

Thong Dee Brasserie is another great restaurant in the area, focusing on gastropub style of food. The result is absolutely sublime, with each bite of your meal tasting better than the last. The décor is very relaxing, so is the soft jazz music playing in the background. The Chorizo Piri-Piri, Pork Medallions and Swedish meatballs are on top of the must-try list and so is their delicious Sunday Roast, starting at 2 pm.

Open daily from 5 pm to 10 pm. Closed on Mondays.

Ket-Ho Dim Sum

We haven’t forgotten breakfast aficionados and Ket-Ho Dim Sum is a fantastic venue to experience a traditional breakfast in Phuket. Phuket has always been influenced by China, as early as the 19th century when Chinese workers came to the island to work in the tin industry, and Dim Sum is now devoured by locals and tourists alike during breakfast. They also offer traditional breakfasts if you don’t fancy the steam.

Open daily from 6 am till noon.
