UNSURE that your durian is ripen enough to eat? Three students at Bang Saphan Technical College in the southern Thai province of Prachuap Khiri Khan have invented a tool to solve the problem, the Thai-language daily Thai Rath reported today (May 7).
When inserted through the thick, spiky skin of the fruit, the metal pen-shaped tool will measure the ripeness of the pulp: Green color means it is ripe enough to eat, yellow means wait for two more days, and red means the pulp is still hard.
“We have tested the instrument several times and can ensure that it is accurate,” said research adviser Jitwattana Boonlert.
The three inventors are Mr Maethee Khampuang, Mr Pantiwa Khamkaew and Mr Somsong Jaeng-aksorn.
