Noodle shop with robot waiter in Chiang Mai

EXCITING people in northern Chiang Mai city is a high-tech noodle shop which has a robot waiting tables with the owner having built it himself with a budget of just 100,000 baht, Sanook! Travel columnist Peeranut P. wrote today (June 1, 2018).

Called @Ubon Vietnamese Rice Noodle Shop, the avant garde restaurant is located off the third ring road in Hang Dong district, with the robot’s name being UBOT-01.

Clients entering the advanced eatery, which specializes in Vietnamese rice noodle soup with pork spare ribs but also has other tasty dishes, can order food by using their mobile phone to connect to the shop’s Wifi and reach the kitchen,’

Or they could use the shop’s tablet to get the process going.

The cook then prepares the dish and puts it on a tray, and presses the table number it has to be served to. The robot then promptly takes the tray to the intended table by following a sensor within black tracks that has been laid out.

Once the robot reaches the table, he says, “sorry to have kept you waiting.” At that point the client has to pick up the tray themselves and once they have done so, the robot says, “please start eating,” and returns to the kitchen.

The owner, Mr Khongkrit Rattanamung, 37, only opened this high-tech noodle shop in March this year with the help of  his girlfriend, with both hailing from central Ratchaburi province and also having studied there.

As they liked Vietnamese noodles prepared according to a northeastern Ubon Ratchathani province recipe, they decided to use this recipe as the linchpin of their noodle shop.

Khongkrit added that he researched on the internet about writing programs, and then built the robot with various parts and equipment he bought from shops and the internet, with it all costing around 100,000 baht.

The robot has turned into a big draw card and Khongkrit is now getting ready to file for a patent and sell similar units to anyone who is interested.

Those keen on trying this shop’s tasty Vietnamese noodles or checking out the robot may do so everyday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. except the 1st and the 16th of the month.
