TO know truly about a place, you have to look at its history. Phuket is an island with a long, elegant yet colorful past. The elder generations’ lifestyle and beliefs were largely influenced from Chinese people who immigrated to the island and have become a precious treasure that younger generations are proud to carry on.
The recently opened Peranakan Museum can be found at The Garden, a luxury boutique mall located on 7 rai of land in the Thalang area, north of the Heroine Monument.
As you reach the second floor of the mall, your eyes will be surrounded by Phuket memories. The staff present was speaking good English and helped us venture through the different stages of the museum.
After receiving some helpful explanations as to where Peranakan comes from and what is its meaning and origin, thanks to the help of some handy screens and adequate technology, we move on to discover how people used to live 100 years ago, in a reconstructed house filled with memorabilia and antics, all kindly donated by locals who wish to preserve the knowledge and culture of their ancestors.
A replica of an old gold shop, as well as a worship room, all filled with objects that were commonly used several decades ago, is available to see right after visiting the house.
Another great feature of this museum is its location, as the shops located in its proximity all offer items that are linked to this era, such as the Baba Studio, perfect to find a traditional wedding dress, or the Peranakan Phuket, which offers bags and other accessories made using traditional techniques.
Food is also present with traditional dishes from Phuket, such as Nam Prik Gung Sieb, Moo Hong, Pad Pak Miang, Senmee Gaeng Pu and Hu Chae, all available at the Yaya Restaurant.
