100 tons of fish die in Nakhon Phanom’s river

More than 100 tons of Tapilia fish (better known in Thai as pla nin) have died in floating cages along the Songkram River in the northeastern Thai province of Nakhon Phanom during the past three days of heavy rainstorm.

The storm caused a sudden depletion of oxygen in the river, leading to massive deaths of fish in Na Wa, Si Somkram and Ta Utain districts, the Thai-language daily Thai Rath reported yesterday (March 9, 2020).

The total damage is estimated to be about 17 million baht. The fish were about to be sent to markets around the northeastern province, where fermented fish is a local delicacy.
