TWO light earthquakes measuring 4.7 and 4.8 on the Richter Scale struck Indonesia’s Sinabang town on Simeulue Island, which is off the western coast of Sumatra island, and is 647 kilometers away from Phuket, this afternoon (August 12, 2018) the Thai-language daily Matichon quoted an earthquake monitoring Facebook page based in Phuket as saying.
The United States Geological Survey, which is a scientific agency of the US government, confirmed on its website www.earthquake.usgs.gov that a magnitude 4.8 earthquake took place 20 kilometers west-northwest of Sinabang.
The Facebook page, whose Thai name translates to “The Center to Watch and Follow Earthquakes in Phuket (private sector)” said the second earthquake took place at 4.37 p.m. today and was 37 kilometers deep. The first one, that measured 4.7, was 10 kilometers deep.
It added that no tsunami warning had been issued and Phuket was not directly affected.
The Indonesian island of Lombok has been hit by a series of earthquakes with a 6.9 magnitude quake hitting the island on Sunday August 5, causing widespread devastation, thesun.co.uk said.
The vast quake struck around 3 kilometers South East of Loloan in the north east of the island, at a depth of around 30 kilometers.
The same area was struck by an earthquake a week previously on July 29.
Since the 6.9 quake, at least 340 aftershocks have been felt across the island including in neighboring Bali.
