24-hour alert at flood-hit Phuket

PHUKET Governor ordered a 24-hour alert after torrential all-night rain led to many roads being flooded this morning (August 15), Thai News Agency said.

Among the roads that are flooded are Phang Muang Sai Kor in Patong, Surin Soi 2, Siray island intersection infront of Super Cheap store and the road behind Suan Luang Rama 9 Park.

Despite the floods traffic is still moving but some roads are impassable for small cars and police together with many other agencies are out in full force to prevent accidents while district officials are rushing to drain out floodwater.

Governor Naraphat Plodthong said he has ordered all concerned agencies to closely follow the rains and keep equipment ready all 24 hours to cope with possible flash floods.

This urgent precaution is necessary because the Southwestern Meteorological Office issued a warning today that a mid-strength southwest monsoon now covers both the Andaman Sea and the southwest coast bringing heavy rains to many areas in Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket Krabi and Satun provinces during August 15-19 with risky areas likely to be hit by flash flooding and landslides.
