26 gas tanks stolen from food shops in 2 days

THE recent increase in the price of LPG prompted a gang of thieves to steal 26 gas tanks from food shops in nearby Chachoengsao province over two days, Thai News Agency said today (Sept. 7)

Bang Pakong police investigators are checking the area around a cluster of 10 food shops located on the way to Sirarom housing estate on Theprattana Road or Bang Na Trad kilometer 42 after thieves stole 14 gas tanks from five of them the night before and 12 more last night.

Ms Phimnapha Wongphithak, 37, who runs a cooked to order food shop in this cluster said she had five gas tanks which were strongly chained but the thieves used pliers to cut the chains and took them all away.

She added that she would now have to spend a lot of money on buying new gas tanks.

Meanwhile NNT said yesterday that Energy Minister Gen Anantaporn Kanchanarat has assured the people that his office is ready to tap into the LPG Fund to offset rising cost after the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) decided to increase the base LPG price by 67 satang to 21.15 baht per kilogram.

Gen Anantaporn added the price hike was necessitated by natural disasters and the global cost of the fuel but gave an assurance that his office will step in if the situation begins to adversely impact the public, noting the LPG Fund holds about 5 billion baht that can be tapped into if needed.
