Five spectators in the annual buffalo racing competition in the coastal Thai province of Chon Buri were injured when a female buffalo went berserk, the Thai-language daily Thai Rath reported today (Oct 4).
The races are steeped in local tradition and take place at the end of the rainy season, which marks the closing of Buddhist Lent.
Thai Rath said the buffalo, which is four-month pregnant, panicked when the spectators, many of them bettors, screamed and cheered their favorite runners. It chased a group of spectators, who fled to the parking lot of a department store.
Organizers later brought a male buffalo to the parking lot, and both animals followed their caretakers to the beach.
