52 foreigners held in crime sweep

TOURIST Police mounted a big crime drive in Bangkok and neighboring provinces and netted 52, mostly African, suspects, INN News said today (Oct. 16).

Pol. Maj. Gen. Surachet Hakphan, acting deputy chief of Tourist Police, lead a team to wipe out transnational criminals and influential groups whose crimes include producing fake banknotes; registering fake marriages; producing and copying credit cards; selling fake diamonds and other new types of crimes.

The drive mainly focused on Africans as Tourist Police say they are a group that should be watched.

Among those rounded up in this sweep were 2 persons arrested for illegally coming into the country; 11 for overstaying; 1 person for letting a foreigner stay in his house without informing the authorities; 1 person for buying and selling forbidden items; 1 person for swindling; 9 for drugs and 27 for prostitution.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Surachet said most of the suspects are Africans who came here to dabble in various crimes such as  money laundering, human trafficking, skimming, selling various drugs and prostitution with these people considered to be a security threat.

He added that they are being sent back to their own countries but their DNA samples is being collected and stored by Immigration Police to prevent their return.
