WITH the passing of 5 of 7 dangerous days of the New Year the number of road deaths nationwide has soared to 317 while 3,188 people got injured in altogether 3,056 road accidents, INN News reported today (Jan. 2, 2018).
Dr Opas Karyakawinpong, deputy permanent secretary of Public Health Ministry, revealed the statistics compiled by the Road Safety Directing Center, with this showing that yesterday Jan. 1, 2018, there was 677 road accidents leading to 71 fatalities and 696 people getting injured.
Bangkok and northeastern Roi Et province had the highest number of road deaths yesterday at 5 each. Meanwhile northeastern Udon Thani had the most road injuries at 39.
The two biggest causes of road accidents remain drunk driving at 47.27% and speeding 26.00%.
This raised the total number of accidents over 5 days of New Year revelry to 3,056 times, with the death toll now being 317, while 3,188 people got injured.
The province with the highest number of accidents is Udon Thani in the Northeast with 114, while Sisaket, also in the Northeast, had the highest number of road deaths at 13.
However, compared to last year, the total number of road accidents has dropped by 70 so far.
