THE accumulated road death toll after 4 days of Songkran revelry (April 11-14) reached 248 with 2,557 people injured in 2,449 accidents, and there were 8 provinces that did not have any road fatalities at all, INN News reported today (April 15).
Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Public Health Ministry Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, in announcing the latest statistics of the action to prevent and reduce road accidents during Songkran, said yesterday (April 14) there were 57 road fatalities, 626 injuries in 603 accidents.
The biggest cause of accident was drunk driving at 43.62%, with speeding coming next at 25.70%. Motorcycles were involved in the most accidents at 79.58%.
Of the 8 provinces without any road fatalities 3 are in the South with these being Yala, Ranong and Satun; 3 in the Central region namely Lopburi, Samut Songkram and Angthong; and 2 in the Northeast which are Nong Khai and Nong Bua Lamphu.
Northern Chiang Mai province had the highest number of accidents totaling 99; while northeastern Nakhon Ratchasima had the highest death toll at 17.
Chiang Mai again was the province with the highest number of road injuries at 109.
