THE Interior Ministry said today (Jan. 4) that the total road death toll during the 7 dangerous days of the New Year dropped by 11.5% compared to the same period last year, INN News reported.
The Road Safety Directing Center revealed that 423 people died in a total of 3,841 road accidents during the 7 dangerous days from Dec. 28, 2017 to Jan. 3, 2018 while 4,005 people got injured.
Yesterday, the last day, there were 386 road accidents nationwide leading to 40 deaths and 402 injuries.
Deputy Minister of Interior Suthee Makboon told the press that statistics compiled by the center shows that the overall number of road accidents, deaths and injuries decreased by around 2%, but just the total road fatalities dropped by 11.5%.
However, it is pertinent that more people traveled during this New Year celebration than last year, which shows that the government’s campaign to reduce accidents is working well, he said.
As the government gives importance to road safety, all units concerned will continuously work on reducing road deaths, both during festivals like Songkran and normal days, he added.
