HEAVY rain pounded Bangkok continuously for eight hours leading to floods in many areas with the floodwater on some roads being 30 centimeters high and the heaviest downpour being at Wang Thonglang district which received 169 millimeters, Thai News Agency said today (May 25).
Torrential rains started at 9.30 pm last night and continued till this morning with some areas till getting light showers. Many roads are flooded with floodwater being 20-30 centimeters on some of them such as Thetsaban Songkhro Road in Chatuchak area, Sukhumvit at Bearing station and Ngamwongwan soi Shinket. Small cars and motorcycles could not go through them and cars breaking down intermittently worsened the traffic jams.
Deputy Bangkok governor Jakkapan Phiewngam together with Sompong Wiengkaew, director Department of Drainage and Sewerage, went to check the flooding and drainage at Chaeng Wattana and Ngarmwongwarn roads as well as the area in front of the criminal court on Ratchadapisek Road.
Mr Jakkapan said the amount of rain that fell in almost every district of Bangkok totaled around 140 millimeters which can be considered to be a very heavy downpour. Flooding occurred in 23 important points of the city and officials are rushing to drain out the floodwater particularly in Rachadapisek, Lardphrao and Ngarmwongwarn areas where it is high
Bangkok Governor Pol Gen Asawin Kwanmuang went to check on the draining of floodwater at Ngarmwongwarn Road, Pongpetch Market, Soi Shinket and Laksi where two traffic lanes are flooded with 15-20 centimeters of water.
Meanwhile the Thai Meteorological Department said Thailand will get more rain over the next 24 hours with heavy showers in some parts of the North, the Northeast, the East and the South. People living on hillsides were warned to watch out for runoffs.
Up to 70% of Bangkok faces thunderstorms with minimum temperature being 26-28 degrees Celsius and maximum temperature 35-37 degrees Celsius.
