85 river piers ‘in poor condition’

Deputy Bangkok Governor Sakonti Pattiyakul has ordered a temporary closure of 85 river piers which are in poor condition. Forty-four of these piers are owned by private companies and 41 by public entities, the Thai-language daily Thai Rath reported today (Oct 30, 2019).

 

The pier inspection is part of a safety campaign ahead of the forthcoming “Loy Kratong” Festival.

According to Thai Rath, there are 355 river piers in good condition in the Bangkok metropolitan area, and 220 of them are operated by the private sector. There are 132 public piers, with three  barely used by commuters.
