9-truck pileup causes massive traffic jams

A TRUCK carrying precast slabs for the new red train line, a crane truck and two pickup trucks were jammed in a nine-truck pileup on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road after a tour coach very suddenly tried to overtake convoy, Thai News Agency said today (July 19).

The accident, which blocked two lanes of this road, occurred beneath the tollway on the outbound side near the police club and led to traffic tailing back many kilometers.

Pol. Col. Chatchai Uamhong, deputy investigation chief at Thong Song Nong police station, said altogether six trucks, a crane truck and two pickup trucks collided and they all belonged to Unique Company with the convoy taking cement and reinforced concrete slabs for construction of the red rail line extension from Bang Sue to Rachaphruek.

Unique Company staff with difficulty tried to quickly moved the 22-wheel truck carrying the reinforced concrete slabs to be assembled as beams for the red line with police, firemen and rescuers helping the traffic situation.

The driver of the big truck carrying concrete slabs told police that the pileup occurred after a tour coach suddenly changed lanes forcing him to quickly brake but the truck carry cement behind him was unable to do so fast enough and together with the heavy load it was carrying the damaged vehicle swung and blocked the traffic.
