DEPUTY Prime Minister Visanu Krua-ngam said today (August 25) that the court has issued an arrest warrant for former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra after she did not show up to hear the verdict in the rice-pledging case this morning, Thai New Agency reported.
The deputy premier added that he did not know whether Ms Yingluck has run away overseas.
Mr Visanu revealed that Ms Yingluck told the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Political Office Holders that she was sick that was why she did not come to hear the verdict in the rice-pledging case.
However because she did not submit a medical certificate the court issued an arrest warrant and postponed the verdict to September 27, 2017.
However Mr Visanu also told reporters that he could not say what the court would do if she does not come to hear the verdict on September 27.
Upon being asked whether Ms Yingluck has fled overseas, Mr Visanu said he did not know anything.
When asked if she has fled to another country would the procedure be the same as that applied to former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Mr Visanu said yes.
Regarding what would happen should Ms Yingluck submit a medical certificate later, Mr Visanu said that would be for the court to decide, be it because of sudden sickness, accident or something else.
The court had to issue the arrest warrant because it does not know whether what is said is true or not but if it is clearly demonstrated the court might listen, it depends, he added.
