DISTRICT officials and volunteers in the central Thai province of Suphan Buri today (Oct. 11) launched an operation to disperse tens of thousands of migrating egrets amid a bird flu scare among the locals, the Thai-language Daily News reported.
The birds descended on an empty farmland and nearby forest in Village Group 8 of Banpho District before dawn. As of noon today, the villagers had to wear face masks to ward off the awful smell of bird droppings.
“Right now, municipal officials are spraying chemicals to suppress the smell,” a villager told visiting reporters. “More help is needed because we don’t know how to chase these birds from our farm land.”
