A GROUP of southern bird’s nest collectors was abruptly recalled by the Chiang Rai governor this afternoon (July 5, 2018) to help rescue 12 boys and their soccer coach who are still trapped inside the huge cave, the Thai-language daily Khao Sod reported.
Mr Alifen Thetnam and his team were about to fly back to their hometown of Trang when he received a call from the governor, who asked them to return to the Chiang Rai cave.
“The governor said he had considered all options and believes we have the best experience to get to the bottom of the cave and save the boys,” said Mr Alifen.
A species of birds in southern Thai provinces build their nests from their own saliva. Collectors use rope to lower themselves and harvest the nests which are attached to the cave’s wall.
