British woman accuses Frenchman of rape on Koh Tao

A BLACK Frenchman was arrested in Phuket and brought back to Koh Tao after an-18-year-old British woman accused him of raping her a middle of last week but he denies the charge, the Thai-language daily Matichon reported today (April 9).

The British Embassy in Thailand had helped the alleged victim file a report with Koh Tao police saying on May 4 at 11.30 p.m. she and a friend had gone to a beer bar on this island, off southern Surat Thani coastal province, and drank and played a game with another friend who had come with her Turkish boyfriend.

After a little while she started feeling drunk as if she had been drugged, and when she woke the next morning  found herself in bed with the suspect, Johan Michael Tungka Bawka, 26, a French citizen, and was only wearing a t-shirt and no underwear.

She was in great pain and quickly dressed to leave, and the suspect did help her get a taxi to go back to her hotel room.

Once there she called her mother in UK, who in turned contacted the British Embassy here to help liaise a medical checkup and the filing of a police report.

Koh Tao police found out that the suspect had gone to Phuket, so contacted the police there to arrest him, and after this was done he was sent back to Koh Tao.

Upon being questioned Bawka said he worked as a policeman in France, and had come here to rest. He denies forcing the alleged victim to have sex with him, saying after he met and talked to her at the beer bar, he invited her to come to his room which she did.

The suspect has now been moved to Koh Samui police station as police pursue rape charges against him.
