THE candle cavers at Wat Pho temple in northeastern Nakhon Ratchasima, or Korat, province are adding something special to this year’s Khao Phansa, or Buddhist Lent, candle procession with this being a float depicting the heroic rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach from Tham Luang cave earlier this month, INN News reported today (July 19, 2018).
This festival, which falls on July 27-28 this year, marks the official start of the rainy season and the beginning of 3-month-long retreat back to temples by Buddhist monks for study and meditation.
The artisans at this temple are currently putting finishing touches to their huge wax candle carvings based on Buddhist scriptures and also usually of some wild animals.
This year, however, there is a huge float showing the 12 boys, their coach, former Seal Samarn Kunun, or Sgt. Sam, who died during the rescue mission, the head of the Cave Command Post Narongsak Osotthanakorn, Army medic Lt Col Dr Pak Loharnshoon and all the diving experts from UK and the other countries who heroically rescued their boys.
The artisans said they want this rescue carving to commemorate their bravery for all time.
