Chinese tourist drowns off Thai island

POLICE on the southern Thai tourist island of Lipe have contacted the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok after a female Chinese tourist apparently drowned while snorkeling off the island this afternoon (Jan. 26), the Thai-language daily Khao Sod reported.

Police said the woman might have suffered severe cramps in her legs while snorkeling. Her parents did not suspect any foul play.

The young tourist was also accompanied by two Chinese friends. They checked in at a hotel on the island on Jan. 21 and were scheduled to return home today.

Lipe is a small island off southwestern Satun province and is close to the Malaysian border.
