Cold snap in the North, more rain in the South

THE Thai Meteorological Department warned that a strong high pressure from China will spread down and cover northern Thailand tomorrow (Dec. 16) while parts of the South faces more rain, the Thai-language Matichon newspaper reported.

This high pressure will also spread down to central and eastern Thailand during Dec. 16-19, causing the temperature to drop by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius.

After that another high pressure will descend on Thailand during Dec. 19-21, with the temperature further dropping by 2-3 degrees Celsius on Friday Dec. 22.

“The high pressure from China will lead to the weather becoming clearly colder in northern and northeastern Thailand, especially the mountain tops, where it will be very cold, or below 8 degrees Celsius.

“Meanwhile Bangkok will be cooler, and it might be cold in some areas. There is a chance that the temperature could drop to 20 degrees Celsius,” Matichon quoted Wanchai Sakudomchai, the head of the  Thai Meteorological Department as saying today.

The South will be hit by more rain with there to be heavy showers in some areas of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phattalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat provinces.

People in eastern coastal areas are warned to be careful during this period, and small boat should not set for sea, as a strong northeastern monsoon covers the Gulf of Thailand, the South and the Andaman Sea.

Meanwhile Thai News Agency said that this morning the temperature on Doi Inthanon mountain in Chiang Mai was only 1 degree Celsius, the coldest day this year.

Frost was clearly visible over a wide area from kilometer 42 to 45, to the delight of lots of tourists who had gone up to the mountain to enjoy the cold.

Cold wind is also blowing through Chiang Mai city and the temperature is dropping steadily.
