Concern over coral bleaching in Krabi

CORAL reefs around Yawasam Island in the southern Thai tourist city of Krabi are facing the onset of mild coral bleaching and local conservationists are calling on the government to take action, Sanook.com reported today (May 28, 2018).

Some reefs in both the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand also show symptoms of heat stress, and divers are encouraged to observe signs of coral bleaching and report them to local authorities.

Scuba diving instructor Pranya Pantajit said sea temperatures around Yawasam Island have been around 31-32 degrees Celsius since early this year.

“This might have contributed to coral bleaching,” she said, adding that the government agencies concerned should continue to monitor the situation.
