The first 4-days of Songkran Long Holiday there are currently 2,084 Driving under the influence (DUI) cases and counting. The province with the highest number of cases is Samut Prakan Province. Wittawan Sunthornkajit from the Department of Probation reported the latest number of drunk drivers during Songkran festivals. 13 April 2021 is the 4th day of the long holiday. Because many courts are closed during this time are closed 160 cases has entered the probation process. 159 cases are drunk driving cases, and 1 case is drug use while driving.
The number for suspects with electronic monitoring bracelets has remained the same from the 3rd day of Songkran with 8 persons. The suspects cannot leave their home from 22.00-4.00 for a period of 15 days. The Department of Probation is tracking the suspects 24/7 through the Electronic Monitoring Control Center (EMCC). The Department is also working with other sectors to make sure the suspects don’t repeat their same mistakes. Drunk driving is the main cause of road accidents during Songkran long holiday ever year. Drunk drivers can end up taking away lives, leaving a lifelong mark on the victim’s family members and loved ones.
From 10-13 April 2021 there has been a total of 2,095 DUI cases separated into 99.47% or 2,084 drunk driving cases and 0.53% or 11 cases on drug use while driving. The province with the highest number of DUI cases is Samut Prakan Province with 154 cases followed by Buriram Province with 144 cases, and Chaiyaphum Province with 140 cases. The Department of Probation has worked with traffic police at 82 traffic stops with 442 volunteers. The volunteers helped give water, clean, measure temperature, and other Covid-19 safety measures to help protect the virus from spreading amongst road users. The Department has also assigned officers to work during the long holiday for legal advice and other services for the people.
