First Kalasin inmate with ankle bracelet

THE first prisoner with a GPS-equipped ankle bracelet was released from the provincial prison in the northeastern Thai province of Kalasin this morning (March 19) and was warmly welcomed by his family, the Thai-language daily Khao Sod reported.

“This is the first case in Kalasin and we have to see if it works out well for both the inmate and the Justice Ministry,” said Chief Provincial Judge Sataban Boonterm.

“The use of this gadget will help cut cost and reduce overcrowding in the prison,” he said. “The prisoner himself will reunite with his family and can make a living just like other people.”

If it works out well, more prisoners with good conduct will undergo this procedure, he added.
