Work is in progress to protect the southern commercial and tourist district of Hat Yai from floods, the Thai-language daily Thai Rath reported today (Feb 12, 2020).
In an interview with the paper, Deputy Irrigation Department Director-General Prapit Chanma said a new floodgate and draining system, together with the expansion of the canal’s bottom width from 24 to 70 meters, will enable the department to release water up to 1,000 cubic meters per second.
Construction of a concrete embankment is now 80 percent complete.
