FOUR foreign governments, US, UK, Australia and New Zealand,told their citizens to be cautious and vigilant in Thailand after a string of small bomb blasts and fires in eight southern provinces from Thursday night to today led to four deaths and 35 injuries.
The US government urged its citizens to avoid affected areas; remain aware of surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. They were advised to maintain a high level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance their personal security, and follow instructions of local authorities
US citizens traveling to or residing in Thailand were also urged to enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at www.Travel.State.Gov.
The British government said there’s an increased security presence in cities, tourist areas and transport hubs but airports are currently operating as normal. There are restrictions and checks on local travel, including on the road between Bangkok and Hua Hin.
Britons were advised to exercise caution, especially in public places, and follow the advice of the local authorities and contact their family to let them know they are safe.
The Tourist Authority of Thailand’s website and call center (1672 – press ‘9’ for English) are able to provide some general advice to tourists in English, the British embassy added.
The Australian government advised its citizens to exercise a high degree of caution in Thailand and that they should avoid affected areas and other crowded places, monitor local media and follow the instructions of local authorities.
The New Zealand government advised its citizens in Thailand to exercise heightened vigilance at this time, monitor the media for updates and follow the instructions of local authorities at all times. They were also encouraged to keep in regular contact with their family in New Zealand.
