Former commerce minister gets 42 years in jail

THE Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Political Office Holders today (August 25) sentenced a former commerce minister Boonsong Teriyapirom to 42 years in jail after finding him guilty of falsifying government-to-government rice deals between Thailand and China in 2013, Thai News Agency said.

Meanwhile former deputy commerce minister Poom Sarapol was sentenced to 36 years in jail in this same case.

The verdict against the two of them was handed down hours after former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra failed to show up to hear the verdict in the rice-pledging case and reports say she has already fled Thailand.
