Fun galore as PM Prayut opens Ubon candle festival

PRIME Minister Prayut Chan-o-chao last night opened the famous Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival and said this elaborate festival should be held in every province, the Thai-language daily Matichon reported today (July 24, 2018).

While candle processions are held nationwide at the start of Asalha Puja (which commemorates the Buddha’s first sermon) and Wan Kao Pansa (which marks the beginning of Buddhist lent), the most elaborate of the traditional parading of candles to temples is held in this northeastern city.

After paying respects to the Monument of Phra Pathum Worarat Suriyawong or Chao Kham Phong  who founded the city in the 18th century, Gen Prayut said this festival is an opportunity to create harmony with the government having a policy to promote cultural tourism to draw additional income to all the provinces. The key is to build up and improve each province’s potential.

The Prime Minister and his delegation also went around in tricycles to view the display of Otop products and various performances at the event.
